Day Two updates

• Metrodome Memories starts his 1987 championship diary (whatever that is) with player retrospectives. The first is Kirby.

• Joe Christenson goes over some key Twins players contract status.

• Jason Williams of the PiPress has what seems like the best blog with updates from Fort Myers so far. Some news from camp today:

Gardy has been impressed with Sidney Ponson through the first two workouts. Ponson’s locker is close to the stalls of Santana and Silva, and Gardy is pleased that Ponson has formed a bond with the veteran pitchers.“We like the way he is working,” Gardy said of Ponson. “He fits in nicely here. He’s got a good smile on his face. That’s fun to see. He’s doing it the right way.”

One-time hot pitching prospect J.D. Durbin will be given the opportunity to win the long relief job vacated when the Twins non-tendered Willie Eyre this winter. Durbin, 24, is out of contract options and still is having a nerve problem in his right biceps, an injury he incurred in the minors last year. He said he still has tingling in his forearm, but the Twins hope he will be ready to throw off a mound by the weekend.

• Ramon Ortiz is still a no show at camp with visa problems. That leaves him, Jeff Cirillo and Luis Castillo as the only players not in camp right now.

• Jonah Curi of Page 2 says the Twins will let Torii go after this season and thinks it's a great idea. I agree.

• Of course this happens right after I buy my new cap for the season. New Era and MLB announce the synthetic caps to be unveiled this year. No more wool. I don't know how I feel about this, but I will be getting one. It will be funny to see Morneau's cap in August without all the sweat rings.

 

Welcome Back

With Spring Training starting yesterday I feel like it's a good enough time to come back to this site and try to add some insight and info.

Francisco Liriano was in Fort Myers and really wants to pitch this year. It looks like his earlier predictions of pitching in October were a bit premature, but he will likely be pitching in the Dominican Winter league in November or December.
"We have a rehab schedule, and I think we're pretty much pointing toward winter ball," Ryan said. "He might be able to participate in some drills in the [fall] instructional league camp ... but we are not going to jeopardize anything with this young man's future."

It looks like Pat Neshek will be updating his blog on a semi regular basis from spring training. He always has some good stories, even if alot of them have to do with "graphing" and metal bands.

Ramon Ortiz won't be in camp until Thursday at the earliest. He's still in the Dominican Republic dealing with visa problems. The team doesn't seem too worried about it.

New numbers were given to the new players yesterday as well. Put em in the books.
